FOX has been innovating through motorsports competition since 1974, consistently refining technology in new ways. Beginning with the second race of the 2022 championship series in Sardinia, Italy July 6-7, the Georgia-based suspension manufacturer will be providing race-proven stability and performance control to the ten teams racing the Extreme E off-road racing series with spec Spark Odyssey 21 electric vehicles.
“`Born In Racing’ motivates us to prove and improve our technology in the sand, in the woods, on the snow, and on the pavement to back up our corporate mantra We’re Never Done,” FOX Powered Vehicle Group Director of Marketing Aaron Freitas said. “No other suspension manufacturer can boast of designing products for UTVs, trophy trucks, snowmobiles, mountain bikes, motorcycles, ATVs, circle track, Jeeps, mid and full-size trucks like FOX can. Extreme E is an extension of what we do best.”
The FIA-sanctioned international off-road racing series recently began its second season. With diversity and inclusion in mind, each team is comprised of one male and one female driver. As well, a third of the teams are backed by Formula 1 world champions Lewis Hamilton, Nico Rosberg, and Jenson Button.

“I’m delighted to welcome FOX to the Extreme E family,” James Taylor, Chief Championship Officer of Extreme E said. “Collaborating with a brand that has such a rich off-road heritage in motorsport and innovative, cutting-edge concepts is a big step forward for the Championship. FOX’s commitment to producing market-leading products, technical expertise and onsite support will be a huge addition to the ODYSSEY 21s. We also look forward to the brand exposure that FOX will bring, particularly in the North American market.
“Our recent test with FOX in France revealed a positive improvement to the handling of the car,” Taylor added. “I look forward to seeing how the Extreme E cars perform this season with the new upgrades.”
Manufactured by Spark Racing Technology—constructors of the Formula E cars with a battery produced by Williams Advanced Engineering—each vehicle is fitted with a niobium-reinforced steel alloy tubular frame and roll cage. The 7.55-foot wide 3,640-pound spec vehicles are capable of 0 to 62 mph in 4.5 seconds, with 400 kW (540 hp) of power.

“We’ve tested with Extreme E in the Nevada desert and in France,” FOX Director of Motorsports Bobby Smith added. “Our technology has contributed to repeated success at the Baja 1000, King of the Hammers, Mint 400, and other major off-road races. Now it’s time for us to put that same FOX technology and tuning through the paces in extreme conditions around the world with legendary drivers behind the wheel this season.
“We took two FOX race-proven designs and adapted them to integrate with these unique electric vehicles,” Smith explained. “The two setups were FOX 2.5-inch Internal Bypass coil-over shocks at all four corners and secondary 2.5-inch 4-tube External Bypass shocks in the rear. We look forward to seeing the results of everyone’s effort.”
